Very Peri Tee

This crochet lace top is your everyday luxury that can be paired with a simple tank top or a silk shirt depending on the occasion. The tee is worked flat from bottom up in two pieces and sewn together using the Locking Mattress Stitch. This project may be an easy start with making your own handmade wardrobe. And once you start, you will not want to stop! The crochet lace top is the perfect option for warm spring and summer days due to its lacy structure. It has got gentle shaping around armholes and neckline to give it more fitted look.

Gauge:

Blocked Gauge:

21 sts and 8 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4”)

Gauge helps you to understand how the project turns out in terms of the final size. If you would like to achieve the exact size of the final project as in the instructions above, you gauge needs to match exactly to the above.

If you get more stitches and/or rows than stated above using the exact hook size as per instructions, your final project will turn out smaller. Conversely, if you get less stitches and/or rows than stated above using the exact hooks size as per instructions, your final project will turn out bigger.

To make adjustments, if you get more stitches and/or rows, you can try using bigger hook size to get closer to the desired size. Conversely, if you get less stitches and/or rows, you can try using smaller hook size to get closer to the desired size.

It may take trial and error to try out a few hook sizes to achieve the exact size.

Alternatively, if you really don’t want to make several samples to achieve the desired size, you can try to alter your tension as you work the project. However, I would advise to try this out once you master the basics of crochet as it may be a bit tiresome to try to master the basics of crochet and focus on alternating your tension while working the project.

Stitch guide:

fsc (foundation single crochet) = ch 2, insert hook in the second ch from hook, yrh and pul, yrh and pull through 1 lp (ch made), yrh and pull through 2 lps (sc made), *insert hook in ch of previous st and pul, yrh and pull through 1 lp (ch made), yrh and pull through 2 lps (sc made); rep from * until required number of fsc have been made.

puff (puff stitch) = yrh and insert hook as indicated in the pattern, yrh and pul, [yrh, insert hook in the same st, yrh and pul] 2 times, yrh and pull through all 7 lps on hook.

puff V st (puff v-stitch) = (puff st, ch 2, puff) in indicated st.

dc2tog (double Crochet Two Together) = [yrh, insert hook in indicated st, yrh and pul, yrh and pull through 2 lps] 2 times (3 lps on hook), yrh and pull through all lps on hook—1 st decreased.

Locking Mattress Stitch = Place panels RS together with edges aligned side by side, sts will be worked through the outer lps of each edge. Thread yarn through the yarn needle and start the seam by inserting needle from left to right through first sts of both panels on shoulders. *Move 1 st up on right side, insert needle from right to left and continue to first st on left side (the one already worked into), move 1 st up on left side, insert needle from left to right and continue to last st worked into on the right side; rep from * to end. Fasten off.

Notes:

  • Similar lace weight yarns may be substituted; please check gauge.
  • One strand of each type yarn is held together while crocheting.
  • The tee is worked from bottom up in 2 pieces.
  • Beginning ch-2 does count as stitch.
  • Blocking is essential to enhance the look of this project.

Crochet lace is one of the best first crochet projects even though it may seem a bit intimidating at first. The trick is that crochet lace works up amazingly fast, it looks wonderful as an accessory for chilly summer evenings or cold commuter’s mornings and it is very forgiving to uneven tension.

Once the lace project is on a blocking matt, you can stretch it out to account for any tension issues and this step also adds lovely drape, which is what we usually desire with lace projects, unless this would be a doily, in which case a good soak in laundry starch is the way forward.

Lastly, crochet lace projects require much less yarn than texture projects of similar size, so you can splurge on some of those exquisite hand-dyed hanks without breaking the bank.

Finishing:

Block as per final measurements. This stitch pattern creates lacy like fabric that is versatile to the amount of ease it can create; if you prefer the fabric to be considerably airy, blocking enables you to increase the measurements by several inches easily.

Place panels RS together aligning shoulders and sew shoulder seams using the Locking Mattress Stitch.

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Keeping panels RS together, place stitch markers 4 (4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5)” from the bottom edge to mark side split. Sew side seams from stitch markers to beginning of armhole shaping. Fasten off.

Weave in ends.

Lightly re-block if needed to reshape the tee.
