Lana Hat

Introduction

The Lana Hat is an easy Tunisian crochet cable hat with wide double brim ribbing and relaxed cable stitch pattern with slightly slouchy fit. A large pompom is a must! This is a great first Tunisian crochet cable project with meditative repeating stitch pattern. 

The pattern is worked flat and seamed at the end.

It is recommended to use natural animal fibers allowing for best cable definition results.

To create this easy crochet cable crochet hat you will need to master (or already know) these stitches and techniques:

Chain (ch), Tunisian crochet technique (alternating forward (FP) and return (RP) passes), Tunisian purl stitch (tps), Tunisian knit stitch (tks), Cable 6 back (C6B), Cable 6 front (C6F), Tss bind off (Tss BO), Locking Mattress Stitch, blocking.

Tools and notions:

• US size 4.0 mm (G/6) Tunisian crochet hook with 25.5 cm (10”) cable
• US size 4.5 mm (-) Tunisian crochet hook or size to obtain the gauge
• Cable needle
• Tapestry needle
• Scissors
• Medium size pompom

22 sts and 17 rows = 4” [10 cm] in ribbing using smaller hook after steam blocking

24 sts and 20 rows = 4” [10 cm] in cable pattern using larger hook after steam blocking

The gauge is essential for this easy crochet cable hat, and will impact the size and the amount of yarn used.

Gauge helps you to understand how the project turns out in terms of the final size. If you would like to achieve the exact size of the final project as in the instructions above, you gauge needs to match exactly to the above.

If you get more stitches and/or rows than stated above using the exact hook size as per instructions, your final project will turn out smaller. Conversely, if you get less stitches and/or rows than stated above using the exact hooks size as per instructions, your final project will turn out bigger.

To make adjustments, if you get more stitches and/or rows, you can try using bigger hook size to get closer to the desired size. Conversely, if you get less stitches and/or rows, you can try using smaller hook size to get closer to the desired size.

It may take trial and error to try out a few hook sizes to achieve the exact size.

Alternatively, if you really don’t want to make several samples to achieve the desired size, you can try to alter your tension as you work the project. However, I would advise to try this out once you master the basics of Tunisian crochet as it may be a bit tiresome to try to master the basics of Tunisian crochet and focus on alternating your tension while working the project.

Stitch guide:

Tunisian crochet stitches are worked in 2 steps; forward and return pass from right to left, with the number of sts (lps) increasing on the hook during the forward pass and decreasing during the return pass.

Standard Return pass is worked in the same way for all stitches (rows of sts) of the first panel as follows: 1 ch, * yrh, draw through 2 lps on hook, rep from * until 1 lp on hook.

Return pass with a decrease is worked in the same way for all stitches (rows of sts) of the second and consecutive panels as follows: * yrh, draw through 2 lps on hook, rep from * until 1 lp on hook.

Edge stitches:

Right edge stitch- This is the first lp on hook and counts as first st unless otherwise stated.

Left edge stitch- This st is referred to in the pattern as the End Stitch (ES) and is crocheted as follows: Rotate the end of the fabric towards yourself, insert the hook under both bars (left and right) of the last st, yrh and pul.

Tunisian crochet stitches:

• First row of Tunisian crochet: Insert the hook in the back bump of second ch from hook, yrh and pul across.
• Tunisian purl stitch: bring yarn to the front on the work and hook, insert the hook from right to left under the front vertical bar of the next st, yrh and pul. Standard return pass.
• Tunisian knit stitch: Insert the hook from front to back between the front and back vertical bar, yrh and pul. Standard return pass.

Other Special techniques and Bind off:

Tunisian simple stitch bind-off (Tss BO): Insert hook from right to left under front vertical bar of the next st, yrh, pul and pull through the loop that is on the hook. One loop remains on the hook.

C6B – Tks in next 3 sts, remove last 3 lps carefully from hook, slide them onto cable needle and hold at the back of work, work tks in next 3 sts, slide first 3 lps from cable needle back on hook crossing the second 3 lps at the back.

C6F – Tks in next 3 sts, remove last 3 lps carefully from hook, slide them onto cable needle and hold at the front of work, work tks in next 3 sts, slide first 3 lps from cable needle back on hook crossing the second 3 lps at the front.

Locking Mattress Stitch – Place the hat RS down with edges aligned side by side. Stitches will be worked through the top lps of each edge.

1. Start the seam by inserting the needle from left to right through the first stitches of both panels at the bottom.
2. Move one stitch up on the right side, insert the needle from right to left and continue to the first stitch on the left side (the one already worked into).
3. Move one stitch up on the left side, insert the needle from left to right and continue to the last stitch worked into on the right side.    

Repeat steps 2 and 3 to end.

Abbreviations used in easy crochet cable hat:
ch- chain	yrh- yarn round the hook
st(s)- stitch(es)	FP- forward pass
lp(s)- loop(s)	RP- return pass
tps- Tunisian purl stitch	approx.- approximately
tks- Tunisian knit stitch	rep- repeat
ES- end stitch	C6B- cable 6 back
RS- right side	C6F- cable 6 front
pul- pull up a loop

Notes:

• The hat is worked flat from right to left and bottom to top.
• Number of loops on hook equals number of stitches for counting. 
• Ribbing is worked first using larger hook.
• Sides are seamed using the Locking Mattress Stitch, the top of the hat is enclosed, and a large pompom added.

Instructions:

Easy Crochet Cable Hat

Ribbing

With smaller hook, ch 110.

Row 1 FP: Insert the hook in the back bump of second ch from hook, yrh and pul across. 110 lps on hook.

Row 1 RP and all other RPs: Standard RP.

Row 2: * Tps in next st, Tks in next 2 sts; rep from * to last st, ES.

Rows 3-27: Rep row 2.

Body of the hat – cables

Change to larger hook.

Row 28: Tks to last st, ES.

Row 29: Rep row 28.

Row 30: * C6B, tks in next 3 sts; rep from * to last st, ES.  

Row 31: Tks to last st, ES.

Row 32: Rep row 31.

Row 33: * Tks in next 3 sts, C6F; rep from * to last st, ES.  

Rows 34-35: Rep rows 31-32.

Pattern repeat:

Rows 36-59: Rep rows 30-35.

Row 60: Tss bind-off.

Fasten-off.

Finishing:

Weave in ends and block to final measurements.

Place the hat with ribbing down, fold the ribbing in half and sew along the starting chain to the corresponding row (approximately last row of ribbing). Fasten-off.

Place the hat WS down (cable pattern and half of ribbing facing), fold both sides in, sew the body of the hat and the ribbing using the Locking Mattress Stitch. Fasten-off.

Create a draw string using your yarn through the Tss bind-off row. Tighten it to enclose the crown of the hat. Sew in all ends.

Attach the pompom to the crown of the hat.
