The Sarah J Blanket is a beautiful, knitted lace baby blanket item that is a pleasure to make and a pleasure to use. It features an interesting flower pattern combined with sections of stockinette stitch and minimal garter stitch border. The pattern is a wonderful beginner friendly project and a introduction to lace due to a simple stitch pattern that is easy to memorise.

Skills required:

To create this beautiful knitted lace baby blanket you will need to master (or already know) these stitches and techniques:

Long tail cast on (CO), knit stitch (K), purl stitch (P), slip slip knit (SSK) (dec), knit two together (k2tog) (dec), bind-off (BO), blocking.

Skill level:

Finished measurements:

The final knitted lace baby blanket measurements (blocked):

105 cm x 98 cm (approx. 41” x 38.5”)

Materials and tools

To get the exact look as on the pictures of my knitted lace baby blanket, you will need:

Stylecraft Special Aran (100% Acrylic | Worsted weight | 100 g (3.5 oz) = 196 m (214 yds)), (#1080) Pale Rose 4 skeins

5 mm (US size 8) 80 cm circular needles or size to obtain the gauge

Tapestry needle

Scissors

You can get your craft supplies here.

Gauge:

The knitted lace baby blanket has got blocked gauge as follows:

15 sts x 19 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4” x 4”) over stockinette st pattern

The gauge is not essential for this pattern; however it will impact the amount of yarn needed to complete the project

Gauge helps you to understand how the project turns out in terms of the final size. If you would like to achieve the exact size of the final project as in the instructions above, you gauge needs to match exactly to the above.

If you get more stitches and/or rows than stated above using the exact needle size as per instructions, your final project will turn out smaller. Conversely, if you get less stitches and/or rows than stated above using the exact needle size as per instructions, your final project will turn out bigger.

To make adjustments, if you get more stitches and/or rows, you can try using bigger needle size to get closer to the desired size. Conversely, if you get less stitches and/or rows, you can try using smaller needle size to get closer to the desired size.

It may take trial and error to try out a few needle sizes to achieve the exact size.

Stitch guide:

Garter stitch: Work knit stitch every row.

K2tog (knit 2 together): Knit two stitches together (as if knitted one); this stitch forms a right-slanting decrease.

SSK (slip, slip knit): Slip next 2 consecutive stitches knitwise (one after the other, from left needle to right needle), slide stitches back on the left needle,  knit 2 together through the back loops of the stitches that were slipped; this stitch forms a left-slanting decrease.
