The crochet Christmas placemat is worked diagonally from bottom left corner alternating white with stripes of red and green up to top right corner.

To create this beautiful crochet Christmas placemat you will need to master (or already know) these stitches and techniques:
Chain, Tunisian crochet technique (alternating forward and return passes), Tunisian full stitch (tfs), increase under back horizontal bar (M1, increase st), blocking.

Materials and tools
To get the exact look as on the pictures of my crochet Christmas placemat, you will need:
Hobbii Rainbow 8/4 (100% Cotton | fingering weight | 50 g (1.76 oz) = 170 m (186 yds)), (#02) Natural White 1 skein (A), (#64) Dark Powder Rose 1 skein (B), (#85) Dark Mint 1 skein (C)
(1 skein of each is enough for a set of 2 placemats)
Tunisian crochet hook size 3.5 mm (US size E/4) with cable (at least 25.5 cm (10”)) or size to obtain the gauge
Tapestry needle
Scissors
Laundry starch (optional)

Blocked Gauge:
18 sts x 17 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4)” over tfs stitch pattern measured diagonally (direction of work)
Gauge helps you to understand how the project turns out in terms of the final size. If you would like to achieve the exact size of the final project as in the instructions above, you gauge needs to match exactly to the above.
If you get more stitches and/or rows than stated above using the exact hook size as per instructions, your final project will turn out smaller. Conversely, if you get less stitches and/or rows than stated above using the exact hooks size as per instructions, your final project will turn out bigger.
To make adjustments, if you get more stitches and/or rows, you can try using bigger hook size to get closer to the desired size. Conversely, if you get less stitches and/or rows, you can try using smaller hook size to get closer to the desired size.
It may take trial and error to try out a few hook sizes to achieve the exact size.
Alternatively, if you really don’t want to make several samples to achieve the desired size, you can try to alter your tension as you work the project. However, I would advise to try this out once you master the basics of Tunisian crochet as it may be a bit tiresome to try to master the basics of Tunisian crochet and focus on alternating your tension while working the project.
Stitch guide:
Tunisian crochet stitches are worked in 2 steps; forward and return pass from right to left, with the number of sts (lps) increasing on the hook during the forward pass and decreasing during the return pass.
Return pass (Standard RP for this pattern): Yrh and pull through 1 lp, *yrh and pull through 2 lps; repeat from * until 1 lp rem on hook.
Return pass with a decrease: *yrh and pull through 2 lps; repeat from * until 1 lp rem on hook.
- First row of Tunisian crochet: Insert the hook in the back bump of second ch from hook, yrh and pul across.
- Tunisian full stitch: Insert the hook from front to back in the next space between 2 sts, yrh and pul.
Make 1 (M1)- insert the hook from front to back under the back horizontal bar, yrh and pul.

- Similar super fine weight yarns may be substituted; please check gauge.
- Number of loops on hook equals number of sts for row counting before Return Pass (at the end of Forward Pass).
- For best results, blocking and using laundry starch is recommended for the crochet Christmas placemat.

Row 1 FP (RS): Pul in back bump of 2nd ch from hook and in the next ch. 3 lps on hook.
Row 1 RP and all other RPs up to Row 38: Standard RP.
Row 2: Tfs in each space between sts across to last st, M1, ES. 5 lps on hook.
Rows 3-15: Repeat Row 2. 31 lps on hook.
Row 16 FP: Rep Row 2. 33 lps on hook.
Row 16 RP: Standard RP to last 2 lps on hook, yrh with B, pull through last 2 lps.

Fasten off.
Weave in all ends.
Finishing:
Weave in all ends and block the crochet Christmas placemat to final measurements.
Once the placemat is blocked, apply laundry starch to fix and enhance the shape.
