This Tunisian crochet blanket combines popular Tunisian crochet stitches, Tunisian purl and knit stitch, in a slightly unusual combination as they are crocheted diagonally from corner to corner rather than in the most common way in straight rows. Together, they create a striking texture while giving the final project a very warm and cosy feel.

The blanket is sized for toddler/small child; however it can be easily adjusted for smaller/bigger sizes by either using lighter/heavier weight yarn or reducing/adding stitch pattern row repeats.

Skills required:
To create this beautiful Tunisian crochet blanket, you will need to master (or already know) these stitches and techniques:
Chain, single crochet (sc; US terminology), Tunisian crochet technique (alternating forward and return passes), Tunisian simple stitch (tss), Tunisian purl stitch (tps), Tunisian knit stitch (tks), end row changing colours, increasing, decreasing, blocking
Skill level:
Finished measurements:
The final Tunisian crochet blanket measurements (blocked):
110 cm x 108 cm (approx. 43.25 x 42.5)”
150 cm (approx. 59 in) diagonally
Materials and tools:
To get the exact look as on the pictures of my Tunisian crochet blanket, you will need:
Women’s Institute Soft and Smooth Aran (available exclusively from Hobbycraft) (100% Acrylic | Aran | 400 g (14.1 oz) = 660 m (722 yds)), Mustard (MC) 2 skeins (approx. 500 g), Plum (CC1) 1 skein (approx. 155 g), Teal (CC2) 1 skein (approx. 100 g), Light Grey (CC3) 1 skein (approx. 120 g)
Tunisian crochet hook size 7 mm with cable (at least 100 cm (40 in)) or size to obtain the gauge
Crochet hook size 6 mm (J-10) for border
Tapestry needle
A piece of cardboard to make tassels
Scissors
Yarn substitute:
Below, I list possible alternatives to the yarn used for this project as this is only available from one online seller in the UK. Please note, that it is always necessary to swatch before starting a project to check the gauge to ensure your final project is as you had expected it to be.
Caron Simply Soft (100% Acrylic | Aran | 170.1 g (6 oz) = 288 m (315 yds)), #9782 Gold (MC) 3 skeins, #9762 Burgundy (CC1) 1 skein, #9608 Blue Mint (CC2) 1 skein
Caron Simply Soft Heathers ((100% Acrylic | Aran | 141.7 g (5 oz) = 228 m (249 yds yds)), #9509 Grey Heather (CC3) 1 skein
Or
Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran (100% Acrylic | Aran/ 10-Ply | 100 g (3.5 oz) = 184 m (201 yds)), #223 Mustard Yellow (MC) 5 skeins, #215 Red Wine (CC1) 2 skeins, #233 Marine Blue (CC2) 1 skein, #204 Stormy Grey (CC3) 2 skeins

Gauge:
Blocked Gauge:
13 sts x 13 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4)” measured diagonally over the stitch pattern
Gauge helps you to understand how the project turns out in terms of the final size. If you would like to achieve the exact size of the final project as in the instructions above, you gauge needs to match exactly to the above.
If you get more stitches and/or rows than stated above using the exact hook size as per instructions, your final project will turn out smaller. Conversely, if you get less stitches and/or rows than stated above using the exact hooks size as per instructions, your final project will turn out bigger.
To make adjustments, if you get more stitches and/or rows, you can try using bigger hook size to get closer to the desired size. Conversely, if you get less stitches and/or rows, you can try using smaller hook size to get closer to the desired size.
It may take trial and error to try out a few hook sizes to achieve the exact size.
Alternatively, if you really don’t want to make several samples to achieve the desired size, you can try to alter your tension as you work the project. However, I would advise to try this out once you master the basics of Tunisian crochet as it may be a bit tiresome to try to master the basics of Tunisian crochet and focus on alternating your tension while working the project.
If this is your first Tunisian crochet project and are not sure if this blanket matches your skills, I have a Tunisian crochet masterclass tutorial that will jump-start your Tunisian crochet journey!
Stitch guide:
Tunisian crochet stitches are worked in forward and return passes from right to left, with the number of stitches (loops) increasing on the hook during forward pass and decreasing during the return pass.
Return pass (RP) is worked in the same way for all stitches used in this project as follows: 1 ch, *yrh, draw through 2 loops on hook, rep from * until 1 loop on hook.
Edge stitches:
Right edge stitch- This is the first stitch and is not usually worked into because there is one loop on the hook left after completing the return pass of the previous row. This one loop corresponds to the first stitch of the new row.
Left edge stitch- This stitch is referred to in the pattern as the End Stitch and is crocheted as follows: Rotate the end of the fabric towards yourself, insert the hook under both bars (left and right) of the last st, yrh and pul.
- First row of Tunisian crochet: Insert the hook in the back bump of second ch from hook, yrh and pul, across. Standard return pass.
- Tunisian simple stitch: Insert the hook from right to left under front vertical bar of the next st, yrh and pul. Standard return pass.
- Tunisian purl stitch: Bring yarn to the front on the work and hook, insert the hook from right to left under the front vertical bar of the next st, yrh and pul. Standard return pass.
- Tunisian knit stitch: Insert the hook from front to back between the front and back vertical bar, yrh and pul. Standard return pass.
End row changing colours in Tunisian crochet: The new colour is added when finishing the return pass of the previous row and 2 (3 on decrease rows) loops are remaining on the hook. Yrh with the new colour and draw through 2 (3 on decrease rows) loops.
Increase (Make 1 (M1)): Each increase row will have an increase of 2 stitches; these will be worked after the Right edge stitch and before the End stitch as follows: Insert the hook between 2 stitches, yrh and pul.
Decrease: Each decrease row will have a decrease of 2 stitches; these will be worked on RP as follows:
- at the beginning of RP: 1 ch, yrh, draw through 3 looks on hook
- at the end of RP when 3 loops are left on hook: yrh, draw through all 3 loops on hook
Stitch charts:
Mustard & Co Tunisian Crochet Blanket stitch chart and legend
Notes:
- The blanket is crocheted flat with RS always facing.
- It is crocheted in diagonal fashion starting at the bottom left edge with 2 increase stitches every row to the middle section and 2 decrease stitches to upper right corner.
- The number of loops on the hook on decrease rows refers to the resulting stitch count at the end of the forward pass.
The pattern begins with 5 rows of Tunisian simple stitch and continues with stripes consisting of 5 rows of Tunisian purl and 5 rows of Tunisian knit stitch per colour, followed by a middle section of 5 rows of Tunisian simple stitch. The pattern of 5 rows of Tunisian purl and knit stitch per colour continues to last 5 rows of Tunisian simple stitch.
The blanket consists of stripes of alternating Mustard colour with Plum, Teal and Soft Grey as follows: Mustard, Plum, Mustard, Teal, Mustard, Soft Grey, Mustard, Plum, Mustard (middle section), Plum, Mustard, Soft Grey, Mustard, Teal, Mustard, Plum, Mustard.
The charts are worked flat.
Optional tassels can be added at the end.

Optional tassels:
Make four 15 cm (6 in) long tassels (two in Teal and two in Light Grey) by wrapping yarn approx. 35 times around a piece of carboard measuring 15 cm (6 in). Slide the yarn from the carboard gently and open the strands at the bottom by cutting through all loops (Please note that the top loops should not be cut). Cut 30 cm (11.75 in) long string of yarn, wrap it tightly around the top loops approx. 4 cm (1.5 in) from the top and secure it by a knot. Adjust the length of the wrapping yarn to match the length of the tassel.
Attach tassels at corners in alternating fashion so that no two adjacent corners have the same colour tassels.
Enjoy your Tunisian crochet blanket!
