It is a nice first project to learn Tunisian crochet in the round technique using double ended hook. It works up fast, so you have a quick win for a small investment of time, yarn and effort! A bonus is that it makes it a great last minute gift idea and perfect scrap yarn option.

To create this Tunisian crochet star coaster you will need to master (or already know) these stitches and techniques:
Magic ring, slip knot, Tunisian crochet in the round using double ended hook, Tunisian crochet technique (alternating forward and return passes), Tunisian knit stitch (tks), increase in Tunisian crochet, decrease in Tunisian crochet knit stitch (dec), Tunisian simple stitch bind-off, blocking.

To get the exact look as on the pictures of my Tunisian crochet star coaster, you will need:
Lily Sugar and Cream Cone (100% Cotton | Aran | 400 g (14 oz) = 645 m (705 yds)),
- Sage (02084) 1 cone
Approx. yarn amount used per star: 10 g (16.1 m)

Tools and notions:
- Double ended Tunisian crochet hook size 6.5 mm (US size K/10.5) or size to obtain the gauge
- Stitch marker;
- Tapestry needle,
- Scissors
Gauge:
Blocked Gauge:
12 sts x 8 rnds = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 in) over st pattern
The gauge is not essential for this Tunisian crochet star coaster, but will impact the size and the amount of yarn used.
Gauge helps you to understand how the project turns out in terms of the final size. If you would like to achieve the exact size of the final project as in the instructions above, you gauge needs to match exactly to the above.
If you get more stitches and/or rows than stated above using the exact hook size as per instructions, your final project will turn out smaller. Conversely, if you get less stitches and/or rows than stated above using the exact hooks size as per instructions, your final project will turn out bigger.
To make adjustments, if you get more stitches and/or rows, you can try using bigger hook size to get closer to the desired size. Conversely, if you get less stitches and/or rows, you can try using smaller hook size to get closer to the desired size.
It may take trial and error to try out a few hook sizes to achieve the exact size.
Alternatively, if you really don’t want to make several samples to achieve the desired size, you can try to alter your tension as you work the Tunisian crochet star coaster. However, I would advise to try this out once you master the basics of Tunisian crochet as it may be a bit tiresome to try to master the basics of Tunisian crochet and focus on alternating your tension while working the project.

Stitch guide:
Tunisian crochet stitches are worked in 2 steps; forward and return pass from right to left, with the number of sts (lps) increasing on the hook during the forward pass and decreasing during the return pass.
- Tunisian knit stitch: Insert the hook from front to back between the front and back vertical bar, yrh and pul.
- Increase: [Tks, yrh from back to front, tks] in the next st. 2 sts increased.
- Decrease: Insert the hook from front to back between the front and back vertical bar on next 2 tks, yrh and pul.
Other Special techniques and Bind off:
Tunisian simple stitch bind-off: Insert hook from right to left under the front vertical bar of the next st, yrh, pul and pull through the lp that is on the hook. One lp remains on the hook.
Tunisian knit stitch bind-off: Insert hook from front to back between the vertical bars of the next st, yrh, pul and pull through the lp that is on the hook. One lp remains on the hook.

Notes:
- The Coaster is worked in the round, with FP worked facing RS and RP facing WS. Each round is worked in smaller increments with adding as many lps on the hook as possible (FP), turning the work around and working the lps off to last 3 lps (RP) from the opposite side of the hook.
- Return pass can be worked from the other end of the same yarn ball or from a separate yarn ball.
- It is crucial to use a stitch marker to mark 1st st of each rnd and move it up with each consecutive rnd.
- The st count refers to the number of lps per round.
Instructions:
Tunisian crochet star coaster
Make magic ring.
Rnd 1 FP: * insert hook from front to back through the magic ring, yrh, pul, ch 1 (1st st made); rep from * 11 times. PM in the 1st stitch. 12 lps on hook. Turn hook around, slide sts to left end of the hook (if working right-handed).
Rnd 1 RP: Make a slip knot with a new yarn end, pull through 1 loop, * yrh, draw through 2 lps on hook; rep from * to last 3 lps. Turn hook around, slide sts to left end of the hook (if working right-handed).
Continue turning hook around between forward and return passes. Move stitch marker up when 1st st of every rnd is made.
Rnd 2 FP: * Tks in next st, inc in next st (2 sts inc); rep from * around. 24 lps.
Rnd 2 RP: And all RP to last Rnd. * Yrh, draw through 2 lps on hook; rep from * to last 3 lps.
Rnd 3: Tks in next 2 sts, inc in next st (2 sts inc), * tks in next 3 sts, inc in next st (2 sts inc); rep from * around to last st, tks in next st. 36 lps.
Rnd 4: Dec (1 st dec), * inc in next st (2 sts inc), dec, tks in next st, dec 1; rep from * to last 4 sts, inc in next sts (2 sts dec), dec (1 st dec), tks in next st. 36 lps.
Rnd 5: Tks in next 3 sts, inc in next st (2 sts inc), * tks in next 5 sts, inc in next st (2 sts inc); rep from * around to last 2 sts, tks in next 2 sts. 48 lps.
Rnd 6: Tunisian simple stitch bind-off except for central stitches of increases (6 sts), work Tunisian knit stitch bind off in these.
Fasten off.
Finishing:
Weave in ends and block to final measurements.
Blocking is essential for the final star shape. Pin central stitches of increases out and place pins between the central increase stitches creating troughs.
