Introduction
The Old Friendships Placemat is a beginner-friendly Spike stitch textured crochet placemat pattern. This is a versatile stitch that is worked over multiple rows and can add a splash of colour to a neutral background. I finished off this placemat while my childhood friend was visiting and I remember vividly chatting about everything and anything with her as I was working on the last few rows of the border.
The pattern can be easily modified to larger size and using multiple colours, opening doors to endless possibilities and creativity.

To create this spike stitch crochet placemat you will need to master (or already know) these stitches and techniques:
Chain, single crochet (sc), spike stitch (sp), working crochet pattern in rows and rounds, weaving in ends, blocking.

Hobbii Portobello (60% Cotton, 28% Acrylic, 12% Wool | Worsted | 50 g (1.8 oz) = 120 m (131 yds))

Tools and notions:
- Crochet hook size 5 mm (US size H-8) or size to obtain the gauge
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
Gauge:
Blocked Gauge:
15 sts x 17 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4”) over stitch pattern
The gauge is not essential for this easy spike stitch crochet placemat, but it will impact the amount of yarn used and the final size of the placemat.
Crochet gauge considerations:
Gauge helps you to understand how the project turns out in terms of the final size. If you would like to achieve the exact size of the final project as in the instructions above, you gauge needs to match exactly to the above.
If you get more stitches and/or rows than stated above using the exact hook size as per instructions, your final project will turn out smaller. Conversely, if you get less stitches and/or rows than stated above using the exact hooks size as per instructions, your final project will turn out bigger.
Crochet gauge adjustments:
To make adjustments, if you get more stitches and/or rows, you can try using bigger hook size to get closer to the desired size. Conversely, if you get less stitches and/or rows, you can try using smaller hook size to get closer to the desired size.
It may take trial and error to try out a few hook sizes to achieve the exact size.
Alternatively, if you really don’t want to make several samples to achieve the desired size, you can try to alter your tension as you work the spike stitch crochet placemat. However, I would advise to try this out once you master the basics of crochet as it may be a bit tiresome to try to master the basics of crochet and focus on alternating your tension while working the project.
Stitch guide for easy spike stitch crochet placemat:
Basic crochet stitches:
ch (chain) – yrh, pull through lp on the hook.
Single crochet (sc)- insert hook in the next st, yrh, pull up a lp, yrh, pull through 2 lps on hook.
Intermediate crochet stitches:
sp (spike stitch) – insert hook as follows picking up a loop in each sp: 2 sts to right of next st 1 row down, 1 st to right 2 rows down, directly below 3 rows down, 1 st to left 2 rows down, 2 sts to left 1 row down (6 lps on hook), insert hook in next st (next st in row currently being worked), yrh, pul, yrh and pull through all 7 lps on hook.

Notes for easy spike stitch crochet placemat:
- This pattern uses US stitch terminology (SC is known as double crochet (DC) in UK terminology).
- The placemat is worked flat in rows followed by a border worked in rounds.
- Starting chain 1 does NOT count as a stitch.
- Stitches worked into stitches 2 rows below need to be pulled up to the height of the working row otherwise the shape of the placemat will be distorted; edges will be higher than middle of a particular row.
- The border consists of 2 rounds of sc in A and a round of sc in B worked in alternated fashion in the round below and 2 rounds below.
Instructions to make easy spike stitch crochet placemat:
Spike Stitch Crochet Placemat
In A, chain 51.
Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to end, turn. 50 sts
Row 2 (WS): Ch 1 (does NOT counts as 1st sc), sc across, turn.
Row 3: Rep Row 2.
Row 4: Ch 1, sc across to last st, insert hook into last st, yrh, pull up a lp (2 lps on hook), drop A, yrh in B, pull through 2 lps on hook.
Row 5: In B, ch 1, sc in next 7 sts, sp in next st, * sc in next 9 sts, sp in next st; rep from * 2 more times, sc in next 12 sts, turn.
Row 6: Ch 1 (does NOT counts as 1st sc), sc across, turn.
Row 7: Rep Row 6.
Row 8: Ch 1, sc across to last st, insert hook into last st, yrh, pull up a lp (2 lps on hook), drop B, yrh in A, pull through 2 lps on hook.
Row 9: In A, ch 1, sc in next 12 sts, sp in next st, * sc in next 9 sts, sp in next st; rep from * 2 more times, sc in next 7 sts, turn.
Rows 10-12: Rep Rows 2-4.
Stitch pattern repeat:
Rows 13-52: Rep Rows 5-12, do not change to B on last row.
Fasten off.
Border
Round 1: Sc around working 3 sc in corner sts.
Round 2: Rep Round 1.
Fasten off.
Round 3: In B, start working in the corner stitch, sc in the corner st, sc in the same st 2 rows below, * sc in next st, sc in next st 2 rows below; rep from * around working sc in corner st and sc in the same st 2 rows below.
Fasten off.
Finishing steps in making easy spike stitch crochet placemat:
Weave in ends and block to final measurements as in schematic.
