Fall Crochet Pumpkin

Introduction

The Fall Pumpkin is an easy beginner-friendly Tunisian crochet pumpkin pattern that is perfect for fall/autumn inspired home décor.

The pattern is a great introduction to Tunisian crochet; as it is made flat using only Tunisian purl and knit stitches and seamed and shaped at the end. It would make a great addition to your seasonal display on its own or stacked for added wow factor.

This project is made using two strands of yarn at once with resulting yarn weight being between worsted and bulky.

Tools and notions:

  • US size 7.0 mm (-/-) Tunisian crochet hook with 25.5 cm (10”) cable or size to obtain the gauge
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Fiber filling
  • Stitch markers (8 x)
  • Optional: cinnamon sticks and twine For decoration

Gauge:

Unblocked Gauge:

11 sts and 10.5 rows = 4” [10 cm] over stitch pattern

The gauge is not essential for this easy Tunisian crochet pumpkin, but it will impact the amount of yarn used.

Gauge helps you to understand how the project turns out in terms of the final size. If you would like to achieve the exact size of the final project as in the instructions above, you gauge needs to match exactly to the above.

If you get more stitches and/or rows than stated above using the exact hook size as per instructions, your final project will turn out smaller. Conversely, if you get less stitches and/or rows than stated above using the exact hooks size as per instructions, your final project will turn out bigger.

To make adjustments, if you get more stitches and/or rows, you can try using bigger hook size to get closer to the desired size. Conversely, if you get less stitches and/or rows, you can try using smaller hook size to get closer to the desired size.

It may take trial and error to try out a few hook sizes to achieve the exact size.

Alternatively, if you really don’t want to make several samples to achieve the desired size, you can try to alter your tension as you work the project. However, I would advise to try this out once you master the basics of Tunisian crochet as it may be a bit tiresome to try to master the basics of Tunisian crochet and focus on alternating your tension while working the project.

If this easy Tunisian crochet pumpkin is your first Tunisian crochet project and are not sure if this project matches your skills, I have a Tunisian crochet masterclass tutorial that will jump-start your Tunisian crochet journey!

Stitch guide:

Tunisian crochet stitches are worked in 2 steps; forward and return pass from right to left, with the number of sts (lps) increasing on the hook during the forward pass and decreasing during the return pass.

Standard Return pass is worked in the same way for all stitches (rows of sts) of the first panel as follows: 1 ch, * yrh, draw through 2 lps on hook, rep from * until 1 lp on hook.

Return pass with a decrease is worked in the same way for all stitches (rows of sts) of the second and consecutive panels as follows: * yrh, draw through 2 lps on hook, rep from * until 1 lp on hook.

Edge stitches:

Right edge stitch- This is the first lp on hook and counts as first st unless otherwise stated.

Left edge stitch- This st is referred to in the pattern as the End Stitch (ES) and is crocheted as follows: Rotate the end of the fabric towards yourself, insert the hook under both bars (left and right) of the last st, yrh and pul.

Tunisian crochet stitches:

  • First row of Tunisian crochet: Insert the hook in the back bump of second ch from hook, yrh and pul across.
  • Tunisian purl stitch: bring yarn to the front on the work and hook, insert the hook from right to left under the front vertical bar of the next st, yrh and pul. Standard return pass.
  • Tunisian knit stitch: Insert the hook from front to back between the front and back vertical bar, yrh and pul. Standard return pass.

Other Special techniques and Bind off:

Tunisian stitch pattern bind-off: Work the stitch pattern as per previous row to maintain the overall stitch pattern between rows, however instead of keeping loops on the hook, pull the loop just made through the loop that is already on the hook (across including End stitch). This will collapse the previously worked loop horizontally, creating neat top edge that corresponds in appearance to the bottom edge.

Abbreviations:

Abbreviations used in easy Tunisian crochet pumpkin:

Notes:

Finishing:

  1. Weave in ends and block to final measurements.
  2. Add optional cinnamon stick in the top centre and tie a ribbon around the stick using twine.
  3. Place the pumpkin rectangle with wrong side down, fold both sides in.
  4. Sew using the Locking Mattress Stitch.  Fasten-off. Weave in ends from sewing.
  5. Create a drawstring on one end of the tube and tighten to enclose the opening.
  6. Turn the pumpkin inside out.
  7. Fill generously with the fiber filling.
  8. Create another drawstring through top stitches to enclose the top of the pumpkin (ensuring the tail is long enough to be able to go around the pumpkin multiple times when creating segments in the step below).
  9. Secure the top by passing through the centre of the pumpkin to the other side.
  10. To create textured segments on your pumpkin, divide the pumpkin into 8 roughly equal parts visually (can be marked with stitch markers) by passing yarn over a column of tps (this makes columns of tks pop out) around half of the pumpkin and through the centre to the other side.
  11. Tighten the yarn until the ridge is visible and to your liking.
  12. Pass the yarn around half of pumpkin that is opposite to that worked in step 8 and through the centre.
  13. Repeat step 9.
  14. Continue passing the yarn around the pumpkin perpendicularly to steps 8 and 10 working half of the pumpkin at a time going through the centre of the project and tightening up.
  15. Finally, make passes diagonally to steps 8 and 10 working half of the pumpkin at the time going through the centre of the project and tightening up.
  16. Weave in ends from passes.
