Summer Granny Sitting Pad, crochet sitting pad, is the perfect option if you are thinking to spice up your garden bench or a wooden chair. It would also make a perfect companion on a beach day when sitting directly on the sand is not an option for you.
The pad is made of two granny squares in super bulky yarn that are sewn together. You can fill the sitting pad with an insert that is available from most homeware stores for extra cushioning.
This project is an easy win for crochet beginners who love quick and useful projects.

Hobbii Umami (78% Acrylic, 22% Wool | Super bulky | 150 g (5.3 oz) = 83 m (90 yds)),
Natural White (#02) 1 skein,
Mushroom (#03) 1 skein,
Airforce Blue (#11) 1 skein,
Dusty Blue (#12) 1 skein

8 sts x 3 rounds = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 in) over granny st pattern using 9 mm hook
Gauge helps you to understand how the project turns out in terms of the final size. If you would like to achieve the exact size of the final project as in the instructions above, you gauge needs to match exactly to the above.
If you get more stitches and/or rows than stated above using the exact hook size as per instructions, your final project will turn out smaller. Conversely, if you get less stitches and/or rows than stated above using the exact hooks size as per instructions, your final project will turn out bigger.
To make adjustments, if you get more stitches and/or rows, you can try using bigger hook size to get closer to the desired size. Conversely, if you get less stitches and/or rows, you can try using smaller hook size to get closer to the desired size.
It may take trial and error to try out a few hook sizes to achieve the exact size.
Alternatively, if you really don’t want to make several samples to achieve the desired size, you can try to alter your tension as you work the project. However, I would advise to try this out once you master the basics of crochet as it may be a bit tiresome to try to master the basics of crochet and focus on alternating your tension while working the project.
Stitch guide:
dc (double crochet)- yrh, insert hook into indicated st, yrh, pull up a lp (3 lps on hook), [yrh, pull through 2 lps on hook] twice.
gr cl (granny cluster)- group of 3 dc worked into the same space.

- The square is crocheted in the round.
- Beg ch 3 counts as 1st st.
- Ch 2 creates corners.
- Instructions enclosed in [] indicate stitches that are worked into the same space/ corner space/ st.
- Instructions between * and ; indicate st pattern repeat.
- The instructions below are for basic stitch pattern; to change colour, work slip stitches at the end of a round in new colour.
- The colour sequence round by round from inside out:
- Light square: A, A, A, B, A, A, A, B
- Darker square: B, B, A, A, D, C, C, C
Instructions:
Crochet Sitting Pad
The crochet sitting pad consists of 2 granny squares.
Granny Square
Chain 4.
Rnd 1 (RS): 2 dc in the first ch (this ch becomes the central circle) of starting ch 4, ch 2, [3 dc in the circle, ch 2] three times, slip st in top of beg ch 4, slip st to next ch-2 sp.
Rnd 2: ch 3 (1st dc), 2 dc in the same ch-2 sp, ch 2, 3 dc in the same ch-2 sp, [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in next corner space] 3 times, slip st in top of beg ch 3, slip st to next ch-2 sp.
Rnd 3: ch 3 (1st dc), 2 dc in the same ch-2 sp, ch 2, 3 dc in the same ch-2 sp, 3 dc in next sp between 2 gr cl, * [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in next corner space], 3 dc in next sp between 2 gr cl; rep from * 3 times, slip st in top of beg ch 3, slip st to next ch-2 sp.
Rnd 4: ch 3 (1st dc), 2 dc in the same ch-2 sp, ch 2, 3 dc in the same ch-2 sp, [3 dc in next sp between 2 gr cl] to next corner sp, * [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in next corner space], [3 dc in next sp between 2 gr cl] to next corner sp; rep from * 3 times, slip st in top of beg ch 3, slip st to next ch-2 sp.
Pattern repeat
Rnds 5-7: Rep Rnd 4.
Rnd 8: ch 3 (1st dc), 2 dc in the same ch-2 sp, ch 2, 3 dc in the same ch-2 sp, [3 dc in next sp between 2 gr cl] to next corner sp, * [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in next corner space], [3 dc in next sp between 2 gr cl] to next corner sp; rep from * 3 times, slip st in top of beg ch 3.
Fasten-off.
Finishing:
Weave in all ends of the crochet sitting pad and block to final measurements.
Place granny squares WS together. Using whip stitch, join 3 sides of granny squares together working through inside lps (adjacent lps when granny squares are placed WS together). Inset the sitting pad insert into the pocket that was just created. Sew the remaining side using whip stitch. Weave in ends from sewing.
