Mini Hexie Crochet Keychain

Introduction

The easy Mini Hexagonal Crochet Keychain is a lightning-fast crochet scrap yarn crochet project that will take less than an hour to make. It would make an amazing stocking filler, last minute thoughtful gift for various occasions.

It is a great first project to learn Tunisian crochet in the round technique using double ended hook.

If you are up for a larger version that can be used as a Christmas ornament, why not try the Sheba Crochet Star Ornament pattern.

Skill level:

The final easy hexagonal crochet keychain measurements (blocked):

7.5 cm in diameter (approx. 3 in)

To get the exact look as on the pictures of my easy hexagonal crochet keychain, you will need:

Tools and notions:

  • Double ended Tunisian crochet hook size 3.5 mm (US size E/4) or size to obtain the gauge
  • Stitch marker
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Fiber filling
  • Keyring/ keychain

Gauge:

Blocked Gauge:

24 sts x 16 rnds = 4” [10 cm] over stitch pattern

The gauge is not essential for this easy hexagonal crochet keychain, but it will impact the size and the amount of yarn used.

Gauge considerations:

Gauge helps you to understand how the project turns out in terms of the final size. If you would like to achieve the exact size of the final project as in the instructions above, you gauge needs to match exactly to the above.

If you get more stitches and/or rows than stated above using the exact hook size as per instructions, your final project will turn out smaller. Conversely, if you get less stitches and/or rows than stated above using the exact hooks size as per instructions, your final project will turn out bigger.

To make adjustments, if you get more stitches and/or rows, you can try using bigger hook size to get closer to the desired size. Conversely, if you get less stitches and/or rows, you can try using smaller hook size to get closer to the desired size.

It may take trial and error to try out a few hook sizes to achieve the exact size.

Alternatively, if you really don’t want to make several samples to achieve the desired size, you can try to alter your tension as you work the project. However, I would advise to try this out once you master the basics of Tunisian crochet as it may be a bit tiresome to try to master the basics of Tunisian crochet and focus on alternating your tension while working the project.

Tunisian Crochet Stitch guide:

Tunisian crochet stitches are worked in 2 steps; forward and return pass from right to left, with the number of sts (lps) increasing on the hook during the forward pass and decreasing during the return pass.

Standard Return pass is worked in the same way for all stitches (rows of sts) of the first panel as follows: 1 ch, * yrh, draw through 2 lps on hook, rep from * until 1 lp on hook.

Tunisian crochet Edge stitches:

Right edge stitch- This is the first lp on hook and counts as first st unless otherwise stated.

Left edge stitch- This st is referred to in the pattern as the End Stitch (ES) and is crocheted as follows: Rotate the end of the fabric towards yourself, insert the hook under both bars (left and right) of the last st, yrh and pul.

Tunisian crochet stitches:

  • First row of Tunisian crochet: Insert the hook in the back bump of second ch from hook, yrh and pul across.
  • Tunisian knit stitch: Insert the hook from front to back between the front and back vertical bar, yrh and pul. Standard return pass.

Other Special techniques and Bind off:

Increase: [Tks, yrh from back to front, tks] in the next st. 2 sts increased.

Tunisian knit stitch bind-off: Insert hook from front to back between the front and back vertical bar of the next st, yrh, pul and pull through the lp that is on the hook. One lp remains on the hook.

Tunisian crochet masterclass

If this easy hexagonal crochet keychain is your first Tunisian crochet project and are not sure if this project matches your skills, I have a Tunisian crochet masterclass tutorial that will jump-start your Tunisian crochet journey!

Abbreviations:

Abbreviations used in easy hexagonal crochet keychain:
ch- chainyrh- yarn round the hook
st(s)- stitch(es)pul- pull up a loop
lp(s)- loop(s)FP- forward pass
tks- Tunisian knit stitchRP- return pass
rnd- roundRS- right side
rep- repeatWS- wrong side
PM- place a markerapprox.- approximately
inc- increase

Notes:

  • The easy hexagonal crochet keychain is worked in the round, with FP worked facing RS and RP facing WS. Each round is worked in smaller increments with adding as many lps on the hook as possible (FP), turning the work around and working the lps off to last 3 lps (RP) from the opposite side of the hook.
  • Return pass can be worked from the other end of the same yarn ball or from a separate yarn ball.
  • It is crucial to use a stitch marker to mark 1st st of each rnd and move it up with each consecutive rnd.
  • The st count refers to the number of lps per round.

Instructions:

Finishing:

Weave in ends and block to final measurements as in schematic.

Place 2 mini hexagons WS together and seam them together through inner lps (those that are closer together) of bind-off rows using your preferred seaming technique (for example whip stitch) leaving a small section unseamed. Fill with fiber fill.

Seam the remaining section.

Thread yarn through one of the points and attach to a keyring (for strong attachment, single crochet through a few stitches and around the keyring).
