Sydney Shawl Crochet Along

The pattern is available from We crochet and Ravelry.

Have you thought of learning Tunisian crochet but wasn’t sure where to start? Does the terminology seem too confusing? How about selecting the correct hook for your yarn? If any or all of these run through your mind and put you off this amazing technique, then hold on and don’t through the towel in just yet! Come on a six-week journey with me, where we explore Tunisian crochet together by making the Sydney Shawl.

During the CAL, we will learn basic techniques used in Tunisian crochet, basic and more advanced stitches including the popular Honeycomb Stitch, lace, cables, simple and stranded colourwork, how to increase and decrease, and various ways to bind-off your work. We top it up with tips on weaving in ends and blocking your project.

A BONUS to mastering a new technique and having this beautiful shawl (perhaps a hand-made gift for someone special in time for the upcoming holiday season?) at the end of the CAL is the opportunity to win $40 gift card from We Crochet for two lucky crocheters that sign up for the CAL here!

Once you sign up for the CAL, you will be automatically notified as the new sections come out and your pattern will be updated, so you won’t miss a stitch!

The CAL will officially start on Monday 03/10/2022 and will run as follows:

Week 1 (beginning 03/10/2022): The Honeycomb section

Week 2 (beginning 10/10/2022): Colourwork between the Honeycomb and Lace sections

Week 3 (beginning 17/10/2022): The Lace section and colourwork between the Lace and the Cable sections

Week 4 (beginning 24/10/2022): The Cable section and colourwork between the Cable and Honeycomb sections

Week 5 (31/10/2022): The Honeycomb section and colourwork between the Honeycomb and Lace sections

Week 6 (07/11/2022): The Lace section, bind-off and blocking.

The CAL prize winners will be selected at random from participating makers at the end of week 6.

Participating crocheters will not only benefit from detailed written instructions and video lessons for each week but will also get access to private Facebook CAL group where they can share their progress with fellow makers and get help directly from me!

So, what do you need and where do you sign up for the CAL?

You will need 3 100g skeins of fingering weight yarn, size 7 (4.5 mm) Tunisian crochet hook with at least 24 in (60 cm) long cable or size to obtain the gauge, cable needle, tapestry needle and scissors.

For my sample, I used We Crochet Stroll (75% fine superwash wool, 25% nylon | Fingering | 100 g (3.5 oz) = 423 m (462 yds)) in Poppy Field (A) 1 skein, Guppy Tonal (B) 1 skein, and Blue Yonder Tonal (C) 1 skein. You can buy your yarn in a handy kit here.

You can sign up for the CAL with a few clicks here and I can’t wait to start exploring Tunisian crochet with you!

See you in October!

  1. Hello from Canada, I have a few questions. I have not participated in a CAL before and have not done Tunisian crochet before (I do crochet and knit)…… will I be okay to participate in this? I believe some crochet terms in the UK differ from ours in Canada?? I tried to click on the “here” hyperlink to find out the cost etc. however, it doesn’t seem to work for me. Also, approx. how much working time on this project is required in between each week? Thank you and I look forward to tackling my first CAL on the Sydney Shawl:) Take Care Janet Mosier

    1. Hello Janet, thank you for your interest in the CAL, Tunisian crochet is a lovely hybrid of crochet and knitting so since you do both, this should be a fun technique to add to your list. Tunisian crochet has the same terms in UK and US terminology. I will be providing video tutorials and private Facebook group for that extra support. The Shawl is worked by gradually increasing stitches so first 3 sections take relatively short time and then progressively more. I am about to start making another sample so I think I am going to time myself, thank you for asking this- this may be useful information to add to the pattern. Finally, my apologies about the links, I hoped they would work by now. I had a confirmation that they should work by Tuesday the latest.
      Kind regards,
      Miroslava

  2. Hello. I’m trying to click on the link to participate but it seems disabled. I love this shawl! Congratulations you are a great designer. Best regards from Argentina

    1. Hello Diana, thank you so much for your interest in the CAL, thank you for your kind words. My apologies, I hoped the links would be active by now. I had a confirmation they should be active by Tuesday the latest.
      Kind regards,

    1. My apologies Dale, the landing page for the CAL seems to be set up by it is not working just yet, I am in communication with the IT to have it activated ASAP. Please bear with me in the meantime. Many thanks. Miroslava

  3. Hello Yolanda, my apologies, the link seem to expire every 48 hours so I have to continuously renew it, please send me an email and I will be able to reply with the updated link. Thank you.

  4. I have part one and I thought part two should be out by now but I can’t find it anywhere. Is it sent to my email?

    1. Hello Anita, there should have been an email reminder from We Crochet to download pt 2. Pls check if it is not in your spam folder. You can also log in into your We Crochet account and it should be available from there.
