Textured Bobble Throw

This throw is the ideal accessory to snuggle up under with a cup of tea and a book. It is a wonderful project to add that extra cosy factor to a new home. Alternating colours and working bobble stitches at different intervals keep it interesting to work a large project such as a throw. The fringe is a cherry on top that adds the wow factor to this project. Β

The pattern was published in Happily Hooked Magazine in June 2020, issue Housewarming.

Gauge:

Blocked Gauge:

14 sc x 15 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4”)

Gauge helps you to understand how the project turns out in terms of the final size. If you would like to achieve the exact size of the final project as in the instructions above, you gauge needs to match exactly to the above.

If you get more stitches and/or rows than stated above using the exact hook size as per instructions, your final project will turn out smaller. Conversely, if you get less stitches and/or rows than stated above using the exact hooks size as per instructions, your final project will turn out bigger.

To make adjustments, if you get more stitches and/or rows, you can try using bigger hook size to get closer to the desired size. Conversely, if you get less stitches and/or rows, you can try using smaller hook size to get closer to the desired size.

It may take trial and error to try out a few hook sizes to achieve the exact size.

Alternatively, if you really don’t want to make several samples to achieve the desired size, you can try to alter your tension as you work the project. However, I would advise to try this out once you master the basics of Tunisian crochet as it may be a bit tiresome to try to master the basics of Tunisian crochet and focus on alternating your tension while working the project.

Stitch guide:

Fsc (foundation single crochet) = ch 2, insert hook in the second ch from hook, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 1 loop on hook (ch made), yo, pull through 2 loops (sc made), *insert hook in ch of previous st and pull up loop, yo, pull through 1 loop (ch made), yo, pull through 2 loops (sc made); rep from * until required number of fsc have been made.

Bo (bobble) = yo, insert hook in st, yo, pull up a lp, yo, pull through 2 lps on hook, *yo, insert hook in the same st, yo, pull through st, yo, pull through 2 lps; rep from * 3 times, yo, pull through 6 lps on hook.

Stitch charts:

Notes:

Similar medium weight yarns may be substituted; please check gauge.

Beginning ch 1 does not count as stitch.

The throw is worked flat with bobbles on RS. Bobbles repeated every 2,4,6,8,12 and 24 stitches for the width of the throw constitute one section. Three sections in blue are followed by three sections in pink and three sections in blue.

The throw has a border of one row of sc.

Fringe in pink is added through each edge st along the width of the throw.

Bobble stitches belong to a group of textured stitches along with popcorns, puffs, bullions and others, but they are in my humble opinion by far the most popular! Some crocheters prefer to work them on the wrong side and pop them on the right side of the project. I however prefer to work them on the right side and if they escape to the wrong side, I just push them back out. Which ever way you make them, they look both great on the background of single crochet, half-double crochet and double crochet (all US terms).

The only down side, if there is such a thing to working bobbles is that they make your yardage much larger and due to that make the project a bit heavier. Which may be actually an advantage when working blankets, as these become warm and weighted, almost like being in a constant squishy hug!
